應我院邀請,俄羅斯新經濟學院助理教授,美國匹茲堡大學修辭與寫作專業博士Matthew Overstreet來我校進行交流並做學術報告,歡迎感興趣的師生參加。

報告題目:'Critical Thinking: What Is It and How Can We Teach It?'

    報告摘要

Critical thinking is an important yet often ambiguous term. My presentation will examine some historical definitions of the term and discuss how writing can be used to promote critical thought. In short, I will argue that critical thinking is best understood as an intersubjective process of reflecting upon and reworking thought patterns. Language teachers can spur this activity by engaging in active dialogue with students. The principle of elaboration can guide such exchanges. By encouraging students to make claims, then elaborate upon those claims, teachers can help bring reasoning principles out into the open where they can be evaluated and reworked. This reworking, I will argue, is critical thinking in its most vital and valuable sense.To show the value of the elaboration approach to critical thinking, I will discuss my work with Chinese students and analyze some samples of student writing.Overall, I hope to show that teaching critical thinking in the language-learning classroom is not only possible, but quite simple.

    報告人簡介

Matthew Overstreet現為俄羅斯新經濟學院(New Economic School)助理教授,主要從事數字媒體和學術英語寫作教學。他學術經歷、工作經歷豐富,先後獲得堪薩斯大學政治學學士學位、職業法律博士學位,伊利諾斯大學芝加哥分校英語碩士學位,匹茲堡大學修辭與寫作博士學位;先後在上海外國語大學、中國農業大學、匹茲堡大學等中外高校從事學術英語寫作、英語聽說、數字媒體、商務與法律等方面的教學工作。他學術興趣廣泛,教學和研究涵蓋英語寫作、認知、數字媒體、實用主義哲學等,目前正在撰寫一部威廉·詹姆斯與課堂寫作教學的專著。
